Referral programme

Your referral link, the 15% discount for the person you refer, the 20% credit you earn, and exactly how credit is applied to your invoices.

How it works

Every account has a referral code and a link of the form https://<site>/r/CODE. When someone opens the link, a cookie remembers your code and they are sent to the signup page. If they create an account, they are recorded as referred by you.

Who What they get
The person you refer 15% off their first invoice (default; the operator may change the percentage)
You 20% of that first settled invoice's amount (default) as account credit in USD

Both figures are shown on Account > Referrals together with your link, your code, the list of people you referred (sign-up date and whether their first invoice has settled), and your credit balance with its ledger.

The referred person's discount

The discount applies automatically at checkout to the first invoice only, after the trial. It is compared with any coupon code entered on the same checkout and the larger single discount is used; the two do not add up. The invoice shows the referral discount as its own line.

The discount is tied to the account, not the cookie: once the person has signed up through your link they keep the discount even if they clear cookies before paying.

Your credit

Credit is granted when the referred person's first invoice reaches settled. It is 20% of the amount that invoice settled for, after their discount. A referral whose first invoice expires or is invalid earns nothing until they pay a valid one.

Credit is spent automatically on your next invoice:

credit applied = min(credit balance, list price - discount)
total to pay = list price - discount - credit applied

Credit is applied after any coupon or referral discount, and it does stack with coupons. If the credit covers the whole invoice the total is zero and the plan activates immediately without a BTCPay invoice. Unused credit stays on the account for later invoices. Credit cannot be withdrawn, transferred or converted to Bitcoin.

The credit ledger on the Referrals page lists every change with a reason: a referral reward, credit spent on an invoice, or a manual adjustment by the operator.

Rules

  • One referral per referred account. Referring yourself, or chaining accounts to collect discounts and trials, is detected (the trial is once per referral chain and email) and such accounts can be disabled.
  • The reward is based on the first settled invoice only. Renewals by the referred person earn nothing further.
  • Percentages are those in force when the invoice settles.
  • The operator can adjust or revoke credit for abuse; adjustments appear in the ledger.

Sharing

Copy the link from Account > Referrals. The landing page explains the discount to the person you refer. You can also give the code itself: typing it in the referral field on signup has the same effect as the link.

Tip: the discount is only valuable to the referred person if they pay within their first period. Remind them that it does not carry over to a second invoice.
